§ 10-121. Speed limits on particular streets.

  • (a)

    Whenever a speed limit has been established and appropriate traffic-control devices have been installed in accordance with subsections (b) and (c) herein, no person may operate a vehicle on any street in excess of the posted speed, except that no signs shall be required where the speed limit is thirty-five (35) miles per hour. See G.S. Sections 20-141(b)(1) and 20-141(e).

    (b)

    The speed limits set forth in section 8 of the traffic-control schedule shall be applicable to the streets named therein, and the manager shall install appropriate traffic-control devices to indicate the established speed limit.

    (c)

    The speed limits set forth in section 9 of the traffic-control schedule shall be applicable to the streets named therein (which are in the vicinity of a public or private elementary or secondary school), and the manager shall install appropriate traffic-control devices to indicate the established speed limit.

    (1)

    The reduced speed limits described in this subsection shall not be in effect for more than five hundred (500) feet on either side of the school property line.

    (2)

    The reduced speed limits described in this subsection shall be effective only for the period running from thirty (30) minutes before the time school begins until thirty (30) minutes after school ends its daily schedule, on days when school is in session.

    (3)

    Where flashing warning lights are installed, the signs indicating the effective time of the speed restrictions in the zone shall indicate "When Flashing." Where no flashing warning lights are installed, the signs indicating the effective time of the speed restrictions in the zone shall indicate "School Days."
