§ 10-3. Definitions.
(a)
The definitions set out in North Carolina General Statutes Section 20-4.01 are hereby adopted as a part of this chapter.
(b)
In addition to the definitions adopted in subsection (a), the words and phrases defined in this subsection shall have the meanings indicated when used in this chapter, unless otherwise specifically provided or unless otherwise clearly required by the context.
Authorized emergency vehicle means a vehicle of the fire department, a police vehicle and any ambulance designated or authorized by the chief of police.
Bicycle or bike means a device upon which a person may ride, propelled solely by human power via pedals, having two (2) tandem wheels either of which is twenty (20) inches or more in diameter, provided that for the purpose of this chapter, a tricycle used by an adult shall be deemed a bicycle or bike. The words "bicycle" and "bike" may be used interchangeably.
Block means a portion of any street located between two (2) adjacent intersections.
Bus means any motor vehicle designed to carry more than nine (9) passengers and used for the transportation of persons, and any motor vehicle, other than a taxicab, designed for the transportation of persons for compensation.
Bus stop means a space reserved for the use of buses while loading or unloading passengers or during layover periods in their operating schedules.
Commercial vehicle means a vehicle designed, maintained or used primarily for the transportation of merchandise.
Commercial vehicle loading zone or loading zone means a space reserved for the exclusive use of commercial vehicles during the actual loading or unloading of merchandise.
Corner means the point of intersection of the lines of two (2) roadway edges or curb faces extended toward their point of intersection.
Crosswalk means that portion of a roadway, either marked or unmarked, included within the prolongation across such roadways or sidewalks or sidewalk areas, at intersections or any portion of a roadway other than at intersections, distinctly indicated for pedestrian crossing by pavement markings.
Traffic lane means a longitudinal section of roadway or driveway, of a standard width, either delineated by pavement markings or other devices, or unmarked, intended to accommodate a single file of moving vehicles.
Walkway means a paved or unpaved area or way, outside of a street, intended for exclusive use by pedestrians, including handicapped persons in wheelchairs.
